But Why is My Diet not Working

But Why is My Diet not Working

Jennifer, a middle-aged single mother with one six-year-old daughter, has been skipping sweets for a few weeks now. She’s also become a stickler for portion control. She feels as if she’s eating less than ever, and she’s been diligently exercising for an hour at a time at least four days a week. Yet, she hasn’t lost a single pound. The question is, “Why?”

This is a dilemma which affects dieters the world over. They think they are taking the steps necessary to iewedonline.com”>lose weight, but nothing seems to be happening. In essence, they are trapped in a dieting rut and they don’t know how to free themselves. As a result, they become frustrated and depressed and may then engage in binge eating.

One of the problems with diets is that they are often standardized. As a result, they don’t take into consideration your individual physiology and metabolism. They provide a cookie-cutter approach to weight loss—an approach which may not work in your individual case. As a result, an increasing number of people are turning to dieticians to formulate a person weight loss strategy for them. This process has been made easier through the Internet, where you can correspond with a dietician any time of the day or night via e-mail. The dietician can also act as your personal coach, helping you through your dieting dilemmas.

Another reason that you may be failing at your diet is because of a lack of support. You may have family members who can eat whatever they want and seemingly not gain a pound. As a result, they may fill your refrigerator with junk food, leading you into temptation. Also, you may feel as if you have no one to turn to in order to discuss your weight problems. In order to solve this problem, many individuals look to psychotherapists to help them with their food-related issues. This can be particularly important if an individual has turned to purging in an effort to combat their weight problems. Bulimia is a serious disease which must be treated in order to ensure the good health of the patient. Thankfully, there are a number of treatment programs throughout the U.S. specifically focusing on bulimia.

Yet another reason for diet failure is hidden calories. You may literally be consuming calories and not even realize it. For instance, the frappucinos that are so popular today are loaded with calories—as many as 600 in a single serving! You may also be indulging in sugary sodas—another source of extra calories. By taking a few simple steps, such as eliminating the exotic coffee drinks from your diet and substituting skim milk for whole milk, you may be able to eliminate the hidden calories that are denying you dieting success.

Lack of consistency can also be a diet-killer. You might go on a diet for a while, then quit before you’ve made any measurable progress. It’s only natural to want to see quick results. The problem is that healthy weight lose involves loseing only a couple of pounds a week. That means you’ll have to stay on your diet for months before you see appreciable weight loss. Discouraging? It can be, but if you keep a positive attitude you can achieve your ideal weight.

You may also be more successful in your dieting if you consider it to be a lifestyle change. Therefore, your diet becomes a meal plan for life. This means that you must change the way you look at food. It is designed to be fuel for your body, and nothing more. As a result, you should not turn to food to make you feel better or to provide you with a sense of comfort. A lifestyle change implies commitment; it means that you are prepared to follow the plan for the long haul. If you feel as if you cannot be on your diet for any appreciable length of time, perhaps it’s time to consider a different diet. Your aim ultimately should be not simply to lose weight, but to become healthier. A fad diet will not allow you to reach that milestone. Therefore, you must choose your diet carefully.

Adkins doesn't work very well. Your body can't adjust to the poor diet. Try healthy fruits and veggies, lean meats, and water, fish, and milk.

That should do it, coupled with exercise.

    Everyone pciks on everyone.
    :|
We do that because we want revenge on those who are skinny (but are the ones that actually have the disorder) so we pick on those that don’t actually have it but are just as skinny.
The people get picked on for weight, either having too much or having too little of it, because it’s something changeable.
I forgot where I was going with this and I want food
    fat bitch out

lol Revenge on the skinny people, its called exercise.

That means you're still not "burning" 1300 calories a day.
You have to eat LESS calories than you burn in order to lose weight.
So, either start excercising to burn up more calories or reduce your intake to about 900-1000 calories per day.

ABs diet isn't magical. At its best, it gives you a very healthy and solid diet that you can easily follow. Most of the exercise advice is pretty basic.

If you are eating more calories than you are burning, you won't lose fat. Typically, when people aren't seeing results it's either because they are eating more calories than they think, or not burning as many as they think with exercise.

I would recommend playing around with your calories some. Trying increasing your lean protein consumption and accompanying it with more vegetables. Vegetables are high in fiber and low in calories, which allows you to eat more and feel "fuller".

You also don't indicate how long you've been on the ABS Diet. Its not unusual for people to gain some weight or stay stable for a period of time when they start exercising and eating more healthy. You may be putting on additional lean mass, which won't translate immediately into a lighter weight on the scale. If you haven't been on the diet for more than 30 days, I'd encourage you to be patient. Sometimes it takes a while. It's not unusual to suddenly start seeing yourself lose fat after a period little progress.

Also, how do you know you haven't lost an ounce of fat? Are you taking caliper measurements? Or are you just going by the scale. Body weight is a bad indicator of body composition. Do you feel any better? Any healthier? Any stronger?

If this persists for more than a couple more weeks, try taking up your cardio some. Or pull back a little more on the food. Each person is different and it sometimes takes a little experimentation to find the right combination for you. I can tell you this, almost anyone can lose fat by becoming more active and managing their diet.

    Hang in there …

    Best of luck!

Let me guess, depression medication? If it's depression meds then you have a slim chance of losing weight.

Try asking your doctor if you can get off the meds or get something different.

the body is an amazing machine. eventually it will adapt to the way you exercise and the amount of calories that are taken in. the body becomes very efficient at processing and breaking down the food as well as adapting to the way you work out. if you change up the foods you eat the body will react differently, it is a sense, shocks the body. some people "carb cycle." this means that they go maybe a period of 4-5 days eating low carbs, under 60-70 g per day and then for a 2 or 3 days increase the carbs to about 250-300. it keeps the body guessing. the body becomes efficient at metabolizing the same food everyday. as for exercise, if you lift the same 15 lb weights everyday, eventually you will be strong enough that the weights make no difference. if you walk for 30 minutes everyday eventually you will stop breaking that sweat and it becomes easy, because your body has adapted to that kind of work. the key to the plateau is switching up what you do every few months. also taking a break from working out for about week can also shock the body (in a good way) when you start worknig out again. did that help?

It seems like reasonable results for effort expended.

    1. 4 days a week for 30 minutes isn't very much, even if you're going all out for that time. Its the suggested minimum for cardiovascular health, but not really burning very many calories.

    2. I suspect you're undercounting your calories by 10-20%, maybe forgetting to count some snacks, or underestimating portion sizes.

I can tell you EXACTLY why the atkins diet isn't working for you!!! It has only been four days!!!! You aren't even supposed to weigh yourself until after the initial two weeks. Sometimes I don't even notice a weight loss until 3-4 days later bc it takes my body that long to register it. You are not doing anything wrong. Just be sure you are drinking a lot of water, and wait a few days to weight yourself. When you do, make sure you weigh yourself at eXACTLY the same time each day and in the same thing. Your body can fluctuate up to 7 lbs each day. I always weigh myself in the morning before my shower. Come back in a week and tell me you haven't lost anything. I would be astonished.

  • 3 August, 2009, 0:46

If you are going to eat there, go for grilled chicken sandwich without mayo or the salads with grilled chicken and low fat dressing. Skip the french fries and big macs. Drink diet coke or water.

  • 3 August, 2009, 7:21

How would you go on a diet if you weren't working late shifts?
Apply those concepts…Nothing should really change, eat as if you would on a diet in the day time, just apply it to your new schedule.
Hope that makes sense. Good luck!

I work in a hospital and most of us work 12 hour shifts. I know the ER nurses run non-stop most of the time. OR nurses probably don't get very many breaks either. If you eat every two to four hours while you are awake you may not be able to at work. Nurses get a break if and when they can. Nursing is a 24/7 job, breaks are not guaranteed (especially if you have a patient that is crashing). You can pack your own snacks/meals and drink your protien shake while you are charting (depends on the food and drinks and the nurses station policy in your facility).

It may be hard, but definitley not impossible! The best part is…when you work 12 hours shifts you probably only work 3 shifts a week. That leaves lots of work out time!

    Good luck!
